Welcome to Blue Petal Coffee Roasters! I'm excited to share the story behind our small-batch, hand-roasted coffee and what makes our approach to coffee so special.
What does Blue Petal Even Mean?
Blue Petal has been in my mind since I was a kid. My grandmother had this sprawling hydrangea bush at her house that blossomed every year. It was gorgeous. My favorite part about summer vacation was hanging out with my grandma and looking at those flowers out of her window.
As it turns out, they aren't as uncommon as 5-year-old me thought. Many important people that I love and care about value hydrangeas like I do. So as a memento of them, Blue Petal just stuck. It reflects the value and love I feel for people in my life, as well as the love and value I place in this business to serve quality goods to the community we are building.
How It All Began
I got my first job at a chain coffee shop when I was 16. During my time there, I realized something: good coffee comes from people who care. After years of exploring coffee on my own, through long years at that chain, or even a smaller specialty chain years later, I finally understood what it truly takes to make good coffee: willingness to fail and learn.
I started roasting in small batches in 2024, starting on a hot-air popcorn popper before eventually graduating from it and moving to a Behmor 2000AB. This shift from guessing temps, times, and burning beans transitioned into learning roast temps, bean density, and even resting times for each roast.
I started reaching out to farms and learning more about processing, even visiting a couple chocolate and coffee processing farms myself.
Our Small-Batch Approach
At Blue Petal Coffee Roasters, we roast in small batches for one important reason: freshness and precision. Unlike large-scale operations, our small-batch method allows us to carefully monitor every stage of the roasting process, bringing out the unique flavor profile of each origin. From smell to sight, we inspect every aspect of the roast before, during, and after.
Every batch is hand-roasted in-house and dialed in to perfection. This means we can adjust our roast profiles to highlight the natural characteristics of each bean—whether it's bright citrus notes, floral and vanilla undertones, or even the smooth caramel and chocolatey bitterness we think of when we hear coffee.
